Why is Justice so slow in Greece?
Ιn his latest article ‘Delay in the Administration of Justice: A Persistent Efficiency Deficit’ in Newmoney.gr, Vasilis Ikonomidis, Managing Partner of VDI Law Firm, highlights the persistent delays in the Greek justice system and their broader impact.
Court proceedings in Greece far exceed EU averages, with first-instance cases taking around 771 days, undermining effective legal protection and institutional credibility. The issue stems from structural inefficiencies-limited administrative support, incomplete digitalisation and frequent adjournments-driving legal uncertainty, eroding trust, and hindering economic activity.
Meaningful reform requires targeted action, such as stronger administrative support, substantial digital transformation, and stricter handling of procedural delays. Timely justice is not a technical goal. Ιt is a prerequisite for a functioning rule of law.
